Student and New Pilot Group

Spins – No Big Deal!

The Student and New Pilot group met to hear the rescheduled discussion about aerobatic flying that was originally scheduled for October.  Arnaud Weber enthusiastically spoke about his 5-day Aerobatic Performance Training course he took at the Tutima Academy in King City.

During the 5 day course he took 10 flights and received a series of ground training lessons totaling 15 hours.  The flights begin immediately on day 1 with aerobatic maneuvers. By the 3rd day, Arnaud was flying a specific routine known as the Sportsman sequence.  Arnaud described a number of familiar aerobatics maneuvers that he flew plus ones that were not so familiar including the “Shark Tooth” and a “Humpty Bump”.  Getting a chance to fly inverted introduced a new challenge of making sure you keep your feet on the pedals while upside down.

If you are interested in aerobatic flying, Arnaud offered some of the following suggestions:

·       Gain some experience with flying a stick.  The planes used for aerobatics are the Extra 300L or the Pitts S-2C,

·       Obtain some aerobatics knowledge

·       Learn about the effects of positive and negative Gs on your body.

One other interesting knowledge that was shared is that one of the areas where aerobatics is flown or “boxes” as they are called is along the coast near Ano Nuevo. So if you are flying along the coast on a nice day near Ano Nuevo, keep your eyes peeled for any aerobatic activity.

A key benefit to this group is the opportunity to share information and meet other pilots. We invite any interested pilot to our next meeting which will be on December 3rd at 7:00 PM at WVFC San Carlos. The topic for discussion at the next meeting will be:

The New Pilot’s Bucket List – see how many of these bucket list items you have already done!

We will also have a small holiday celebration during our meeting so please be sure not to miss that!

Everyone is welcome and in addition to getting some free food you will have a great chance to meet your fellow pilots in an informal setting.
