CHIEF PILOT!
by Mike Latzky, General Manager

As part of our efforts to streamline costs, improve efficiency, and maintain our focus on safety, we eliminated the position of "Chief Pilot" in December, 2001 and created the position of Director of Flight Safety ("DFS"). One purpose of the change was to create a management level position devoted to safety issues. We believed such a change would lead to improved safety for all members.

Since the change, it has become apparent that in creating a management level position for safety, we lost some of the day-to-day contact and interaction with instructors and members, which is beneficial to our overall safety program. Many instructors have voiced their opinions about a need for the Chief Pilot position in order to maintain a closer connection to the concerns of instructors and pilots. After listening to the membership, we have decided to re-institute the position of Chief Pilot and eliminate the position of DFS. Josh Smith has accepted the position of Chief Pilot.

I will work closely with the Chief Pilot to enhance our safety program for all of our members and guests. If you have any questions about this change, please give me a call or stop by anytime.

BOARD UPDATE

Unfortunately, the Board has received and accepted the resignation of Martin Michaud for personal and private reasons. While Martin will of course continue as a CFI, owner, and strong supporter with the Club, we will lose his wise counsel on the Board. We would like to take this opportunity to thank Martin for his years of service and dedication on the Board. Those of you who know Martin well know that he is on a "search for serenity." We all understand that service on the Board is surely not the fastest path to that destination. Nevertheless, we'll still do our part to make the occasional interruption from that journey, and consider Martin as a "Member Emeritus" of the Board.

MAINTENANCE MANAGER CHANGES

As you may have heard, Gary Hentschel, our Maintenance Manager, is moving back home to Texas. We're sorry to see him go, and will miss his expertise and his easy going style. Gary's last day with the Club will be Friday, October 4.

As part of the expansion of the responsibility for Flight Operations, Josh Smith will be taking over Maintenance as Interim Director of Maintenance. Josh will have day to day responsibility for the workings of the MX department.

We're also actively searching for a new Director of Maintenance. If you know of any suitable candidates, please ask them to call Mike at 650.856.2030, or email a resume to gm@wvfc.org. Your help will be appreciated by all!
