Why are you a Certified Flight Instructor?

I would like to help promote General Aviation and General Aviation safety. I do not need to build hours, but am eager to teach others to be good and safe pilots.

How long have you been instructing?
I have been an instructor for 2 1/2 years and I have more than 2,000 hours of experience flying and would now like to share that experience.

Do you tend to favor PAO or SQL, and how might it affect a student's ability to schedule time?
When I am not flying, I run a technology startup in Santa Clara. Therefore, during the week I prefer Palo Alto. On weekends I can also meet at San Carlos.

How would you describe your availability in general?
I am part-time instructor, generally most available on weekends. During the week, I am available to instruct first thing in the morning or in the late afternoon.

What method of ground school do you prefer and how does it relate to your syllabus?
I think all students benefit from classroom instruction and the associated interaction with other student pilots. I also review all technical subjects during my private flight lessons. My syllabus includes self-study and review before each lesson. In my experience, most students benefit from combining both types of instruction. Students can also reinforce their learning by leveraging the many excellent video courses that are currently available.

What is your favorite aircraft to instruct in?
Piper makes a great training aircraft.

What are your aircraft recommendations for a new student?
I think that every student should choose an airplane based on his or her budget and long term goals. WVFC has a range of training aircraft from which to choose. We can fly in different aircraft during the initial lessons so that the student can express his or her preferences.

What percentage of your students pass their checkride on the first try?
I am looking forward to maintaining my record of 80% success.

Additional Comments:
I really like to fly. I own an airplane and use it for family trips and to help others through Angel Flight and The Flying Doctors, two charitable organizations with which I am heavily involved.

I believe that excellence in aviation requires continuous learning and training around the latest equipment and techniques. I am currently working towards my CFII rating and adding new aircraft in which I am certified to instruct. Humility and openness to improvement engender safe and outstanding performance, and I love to guide others who might benefit from my own experience. Coaching individuals through the pilot learning process is my biggest reward.
