Jeff Zacharias

I grew up in Saskatoon, Canada and I received my Bachelor of Education there. Instead of being a teacher I went into the field of computers doing Unix and SAN administration. Although I always wanted to become a pilot, I did not start flying until I moved to California a few years ago. Once I started flying I simply could not stop! My first experience in a small plane was actually doing skydiving, but it was not until my commute took me past San Carlos everyday, that it finally got me to start my training. Besides flying I like spending time with my dog, running, biking, skiing and scuba diving.

Why are you a Certified Flight Instructor?
It combines two of my passions. The freedom of flying through the air and watching the world from above, and the reward of teaching students.

Do you tend to favor PAO, SQL, HWD or E16, and how might it affect a student's ability to schedule time?
In live in San Francisco, so I can teach out of PAO, SQL, and HWD. E16 is a stretch for me in driving distance, but you can call me and work out the details if you want to fly out of E16.

How would you describe your availability in general?
I am available anytime. If you book me in less than 24 hours in advance, please give me a call and let me know.

What method of ground school do you prefer and how does it relate to your syllabus?
West Valley offers an excellent ground school. Being in a classroom gives you the ability to interact with other students, which is hard to replicate anywhere else. There are also excellent ground school DVDs, but I would combine it with some training with your instructor. One on one ground instruction is another option, but it is often the most expensive one.

What is your favorite aircraft to instruct in?
I like to instruct in any aircraft that the student feels comfortable in.

What are your aircraft recommendations for a new student?
Both the Pipers and Cessnas are good aircraft to train in. I encourage students to try out both in the beginning and then make a decision. I am only able to instruct in the C-152 when my students are 160 lbs or less.

Additional Comments:
I am now implementing a new training program that is rarely found in General Aviation, but was adopted by the US Navy. Learning to fly using PC based Flight Simulator. Flight Simulators can substantial cut the cost of training, and it is a great steeping stone for people interested in flying, but are not ready to fly a real airplane.
