Linda Monahan

I learned to fly in the rockies of Montana. I got my glider ratings and to make me a better mountain pilot. I'm a captain in the C.A.P. and a mountain search pilot for the Montana state aeronautics Dept. Obviously my greatest flying love is back country/mountain flying in Idaho and Montana. I moved back to California 2 years ago and went to work at WVFC. Actually, flying is my second career. I'm a retired police officer from the LAPD.

Why are you a Certified Flight Instructor?
I LOVE to teach. I enjoy sharing my world with my students. It's such a thrill to me to watch my 'kids' grow up into safe, confident, mature pilots. We end up being friends for a life time.

How long have you been instructing?
I started flying in 1992, instructing since 1995. I have 5500 hours as of 4/2006.

Do you tend to favor PAO, SQL, HWD or E16, and how might it affect a student's ability to schedule time?
Most of my students are out of PAO but I fly at both airports. The nice thing about West Valley, if our airport of choice doesn't have a plane we can usually find one at the other airport. Besides I think it's good for my students to fly out of both airports.

How would you describe your availability in general?
During the week, usually. I am available to my students on Saturdays when needed.

What method of ground school do you prefer and how does it relate to your syllabus?
I've taught the Private and Instrument ground schools since 1996. I am currently teaching the IFR ground school at PAO. I think the ground school approach is good but it may not work for everyone so I believe in being flexible.

What is your favorite aircraft to instruct in?
I'm not the least bit picky. Cessnas are nice because you can stand under the wing and see down, Pipers are nice because the view is a little better above you.

What are your aircraft recommendations for a new student?
Cessna 152 or 172. Piper Warrior to start then transition to the Archer.

What percentage of your students pass their checkride on the first try?
Never had a Private Pilot fail a check ride. I'm a Gold Seal Instructor...
