Dominique Yarritu

I was born in Madagascar, raised in Versailles (France) and relocated from Switzerland to the Bay Area -which I definitely call home now- about 13 years ago.

Flying was always part of my life as I spent many hours in multiple airports and jetliners' cockpits when I was a young teenager traveling extensively within Europe and West Africa.

When I am not flying, I love dancing, reading, gardening, food, and daydreaming!

Why are you a Certified Flight Instructor?
Once I started flying, I could not stop! I loved the challenge, the landscapes and the constant learning aspect of it. I became a flight instructor to share my passion for flight and help others fulfill their dream! I mostly enjoy the one-on-one aspect of flight training, seeing my students grow and become independent and thoroughly love seeing them solo for the first time!

How long have you been instructing?
I started to teach in June 2001, I have well over 3000 hrs of instruction given and have been flying in total for close to 11 years. I also held positions as director of operations of a flight club and chief pilot of two major flight training organizations.

Do you tend to favor PAO, SQL, HWD or E16, and how might it affect a student's ability to schedule time?
I have a preference for Palo Alto where I did all of my training, but I will teach in San Carlos and I am willing to go to South County for longer lessons.

How would you describe your availability in general?
I am available weekdays (preferably in the afternoons) and weekends. If my schedule is blocked but you still want to fly, call me, I might be able to make an exception or re-arrange my schedule.

What method of ground school do you prefer and how does it relate to your syllabus?
I highly recommend the private pilot, instrument and commercial ground school DVDs by MS Aviation. They are DVDs that combine the aeronautical knowledge, FAA written test prep and checkride prep all in one. They are available for purchase at www.pilottraining.com. However, for those students who like to be in a class setting, WVFC offers on-going private and instrument ground schools. I have also started to tailor ground schools for my own students who are at the same training level to cover all the aeronautical knowledge.

What is your favorite aircraft to instruct in?
I quite like the C-172SP: it is a really good training platform (for the private and the instrument alike) with good avionics and is quite stable. But there are other nice airplanes to train in, depending on what the students' goals are, what phase of the training they are at and which one they feel most comfortable in.

What are your aircraft recommendations for a new student?
I give the choice to the students: we sit or even fly in two or three different airplanes (high and low wings) so they can choose the one they are most comfortable in (unless they start the training with a particular airplane in mind or they have their own airplane).

What percentage of your students pass their checkride on the first try?
90%
